#books: Never thought I would enjoy reading on my tablet as much as I do. The thought of carrying a whole library with me (potentially) is also comforting. Your hypothesis sounds really interesting! I can't help but think of the growing surrogate mother business as well (a woman I met at a party told me about a man who was pro surrogate because "women love being pregnant").

Yes, the whole surrogate business got me into linking population discourse and embodiement in the first place, some long years ago. A colleague of mine is also doing research on the sources of stem cells (ie embryos) for stem cell research and the results are quite chilling in a sci-fi way.

I'm not really caught up on the stem cell issue (not sure I want to be either? How terrible does it get?). I heard something a while ago that stem cells could be derived from umbilical cords which sounded good, tho. (But yeah, so many many ways for all this shit to go extremely bad.)

(Topically, the editorial of the morning paper argues against a suggestion to criminalize buying sex abroad because "how will they feed their children?" and "it's not so bad in Germany!")
