Having been called "Vanilla" a few weeks ago has gotten under my skin... it's not festering, but my immunities are on high alert. And while I may be content with who I am and my choice of lifestyle, I'm not satisfied with being called plain. Granted, only one person gave me that flavorless title and though it could be brushed off as a stranger's

I really dislike Hot Topic...I mean I guess it can be good for people who may live in areas where that's the only access to that kind of stuff people have...but anymore it seems like the crowd of 14-18 year-old 'goth' types (see--pantsmetal, spooky kids) all look exactly the same. Bravo! You've mainstreamed a subculture! Bo-ring...
I get my clothes from all over, and lots from Goodwill. Our Goodwill even has a 'black' section, so it's easy. :D
I've always tried to resist pressures from other goths to wear certain things...I tend to wear stuff that's as equally fashionable ten years from now or ten years ago. Plus all the stuff I wear really fits with my very personal sense of fashion...I might term it "casual Victorian goth." I will say the nice thing about wearing mostly black is that it's easy as hell to put an outfit together in the morning. ;)

and black deals with other colors quite well...
Although I do shop at Hot Topic on ocassion, I'm still not fond about mainstreaming subcultures...
You'll appreciate this:
Not long after they opened the HT in the Ashes, anniedonia and I sat outside and watched three pinky prep girls enter and come out completely spooky-fied! I swear on my sketchbook, it was amazing.
Also, as an artist, I admit I like the cut of the clothes they produce... I like the way they look both on a body and on the hanger... very cartoony even... BUT I am far too utilitarian to justify wearing pants that have useless ribbons and decorative chains... and don't even get me started on fake pockets.
I love me some pockets.
Hand-me-downs, Thift Stores and Goodwill was the way it was done... glad to see you're still creative.

I'm friendly and everything, but I usually like to observe some one before I ever introduce myself. I avoid a lot of potentially annoying relationships by giving myself a little time before I decide whether I want to step into that person's lives.
Does that sound cold or phobiac? It works pretty well for me. I do put myself into situations where the people I observe seem give off that multiversal interactability that I seek in a friend.
It's not like I hide in the house all day.

But my malfunction is that I tend to step in and scare them...

1. Barty Crouch, Jr.
2. The tenth Doctor
3. Giacomo Casanova
None are vanilla.
(And I find Casanova more memorable for being an accomplished jack-of-all-trades than for being a player.)

I forgot about the Dr. Who comments!... Long before Harry Potter escaped JKR's skull, I would get a lot of remarks regarding the Doctor... I've had the black & white (it's actually more of an off-white or, ehem, vanilla) scarf for 15 years now. Before that I wore a hand-knit, brownish scarf that was at least 10 feet long.
Casanova eh? Reading up on him now in wikipedia and wow... I'd like to say that although I'm quite the Jack, and I've had a lot of great adventures with women, I can still count the number of intimate partners on two hands.... and I'm mercifully free from venereal disease according to my recent test results. But he was definitely a memorable character.

I'm relatively sure that my former co-worker Dave called you Harry Potter at the Brick Store on Monday because of that scarf. For the record, I'm 90% certain that Dave has neither seen nor read any of the Harry Potter movies or books.
I'm in the same boat you are regarding romantic adventures. I had a friend in college who insisted that a person was neither a slut nor a player until they'd had sex with more people than they were years old. I think that's a pretty handy rule of thumb, especially since I doubt I'll ever be on the other side of the dividing line.

I personally happen to like Hot Topic, despite what a lot of people say about it. They have a lot of cute t-shirts and shoes there. If you ask me, the people that are all like "OH NOES HOT TOPIC SUX!!" are just as bad as the so-called "mall goths" and whatnot. Honestly, it's just a store. Is the success of Hot Topic any worse than seeing pyramid-studded belts for 9.97$ at Wal-mart? People need to relax and be themselves, whatever that may be, instead of worrying about what has become trendy or mainstream.
By the way....Nice coat!! XD

Loving the new coat too! I'll echo the other posters when I say you look really good! Actually, you look a lot like an old friend of mine named Rich..

That plant is actually part of my self-imposed "drawing therapy"... it's a page from a world which focuses on a place I'm calling the Tattered Isles...
I went through a "spell" where I didn't draw much... about eh, *wiggles hand in estimation* I'd say three complete drawings in 10 years? That's not very good considering that I was creating about three new characters a week in the early 90's.
