beatles, mats, jayhawks, REM: you're 4 for 4 with me. I used to like some top 40 crap back in the early 80s more than I should have b/c it was all I was exposed to (my parents basically only let us listen to Classical or Beatles) and my neighbors just had on local bad radio.
Luckily I had some friends that listened to the Talking Heads and better stuff even as early as the late 70s so I grew out of liking crap.
I grew up on Casey Kasem and the Weekly Top 40 and a lot of Solid Gold on TV. And I still LOVE a great, disposable pop song (see American Idol alums like Kelly Clarkson or Adam Lambert). But the lasting stuff comes via whole albums and 9 out of 10 times that comes via bands/artists who score their hits as coincidence for making great albums.
I never could really get into Talking Heads. I've tried and I like a handful of their songs but something about them never really struck a chord with me. Oh well.. :)
Speaking of Casey Kasem, I discovered last week that our "oldies" station (which now, of course, plays oldies from the '80s as well as the '70s and (sometimes) the '60s) is playing complete vintage American Top 40 with Casey Kasem shows on Saturday mornings. I fell into the 5/22/1976 show and listened to the top 12 or songs (with present day intros from Casey himself). Don't know if the shows are including the extra stuff (like Long Distance Dedications, etc.), but I was amazed to hear a Top 10 song from 1976 that I truly don't think I've heard since 1976 and had subsequently completely forgotten about.
