[Guys Only] 'Male Bonding'

Spock wasn’t entirely sure who got the bright idea to bring these three together and engage in a game using numbered playing cards and multi colored disks, but Kirk had pulled out all the stops for their get together. He heard someone refer to the evening as “Boys Nights” and made the assumption that it had something to do with what Humans called ‘ ( Read more... )

Frank's opinion of Captain Kirk was fairly obvious, but there was no way in hell that Frank was going to turn down a game of poker. He fancied himself a much better card player than he actually was, and had high hopes of beating that cocky smirk right off Kirk's face.

Frank walked in to the recreation hall to find Spock seated at a round table. He sat down next to the pointy eared man and before saying a word, grabbed one of the Cuban cigars. He lit the cigar and inhaled deeply. Frank slowly released the smoke from his lungs.

"Nice hat," he said with a hint of sarcasm.

Jim and Bones entered the room together. For Bones, it was like stepping back into the Academy. They'd been connected at the hip for almost all their outings, Bones there to keep Jim from doing something stupid and Jim there to make sure Bones actually smiled. On nostalgia alone, Bones was already having one of the nicest nights since before the Narada debacle ( ... )

"Well, lads, I come bearing gifts." His voice was cheerful. If he was honest, he'd been rather excited about the poker night since he received the invitation. He slid a bowl of potato chips onto the table, stole one and made his way to the chair next to Spock. It wasn't a game Scotty was used to playing but he understood the rules and if worse came to worst he was sat next to a biological machine and calculator. It could come in handy. Cheating was not in his nature, mind you ( ... )

Spock nodded to each of them as they entered. He gave Frank a look as he noted the sarcasm in the man’s voice concerning his hat. He saw no problem with it and it was appropriate attire for the game in accordance with the game at hand. Besides, if Bones hadn’t said anything yet it must not have been that bad. It irritated Spock a little that his proverbial nemesis was what rated other people’s snide comments against ( ... )

In his defense, Bones had been learning how to tell Spock's various states of neutral. There was "I'm internally mocking you" versus "I am genuinely baffled" and of course "you are being illogical and I wish you'd desist immediately." Jim got the last one quite a bit, while Bones tended to be on the receiving end of the first. The look Spock was giving him now was definitely "your silly human tendencies mildly intrigue me." Well, Bones was game.

"Cigars used to be made of tobacco, but they outlawed the awful stuff back in the 21st century. These, my friend, are made with the best chemically-modified plants money can buy. We picked them up during a memorable trip to New Orleans." He shot a look at Jim, trying not to smirk. "The purpose is... well. Pleasure, I suppose. It's different for everyone, why they like it specifically, but the end result is enjoyment. It enhances one's experience." Bones leaned back and took a long drag, slowly releasing the smoke after a long moment. In medical school, he'd had a habit of chain-smoking ( ... )
