I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to go to Paris for a few days to see Barry (and Paris, obviously) and celebrate his birthday

Well, for someone who has never been able to afford to travel anywhere, I'd say go to Paris. Cliche? Maybe. But to somebody who hasn't had a real vacation in, geez...more than 10 years? It's still pretty cool, even if you seem to think it's tacky. You have no idea how lucky you are to be able to do all this Europe stuff. If it was me, I'd be going ANYWHERE I COULD!!!
I can't say that Paris is high on my list of places to go to [again]. I have a few not-so-happy memories with Paris (all I am going to say on that is taxis). But if you find a cheap fare in and stay in a hostel (maybe?), I hear rumors that the museums are going to be going Free! admissions-wise. Louvre was pretty awesome, even if we didn't get to see the Mona Lisa (stupid construction - her wing was closed).
You're right. Even though I imagine myself living in Europe in the long run, I still can't think of any better reason for going to Paris then. It'll always be a bit unappealing but something that I feel I should do. I think I'm going to give it a try.
Yeah, I generally vote that you go. But when did you decide you wanted to leave the beaten path? I'm glad--I'd certainly like to explore the less-visited parts of the world with you.
I think it was a combination of your desire to leave the beaten path and being able to say that I've been to Hungary (and now the Czech Republic, Belgium, and Poland) when most people just go to London and Paris.
I say, split the difference. If you're worried about the expense, only go for a day or two (as opposed to a few days). I know it's not so much you're worried about the expense, per se, but that you'd rather spend on somewhere else.
When you're there, am I wrong in assuming that if you change your mind, you could always stay longer?
Yeah, I plan to book round trip flights but the one coming back is only 30 Euros so I could eat a cost like that. Perhaps not smart, though, considering my concern about money. :P

Maybe I can avoid the whole taxi thing. I should get myself a good transit map.
