It sounds like "Enough of Its Glory Remains" by Balefully. Dean's leg is too messed up to work at a garage so Sam works there while Dean ends up at a bookstore. It has illustrations. I have a pdf dated about 10 years ago so I don't remember where I downloaded it from.
