Lisa and I were talking just a bit ago, and she was telling me about harvesting sorrel to make tea - bright red tea for Christmas time. She said she remembered helping her grandmother peel the flowers when she was a little girl in Jamaica, and how her grandmother never needed gloves although the flowers were sticky and prickly. He was my mum's first professor way back in the dark ages 1970s, and it was his first class too (after a mid-life career change from being in the Navy to becoming a prof).
