Title: Camaraderie Fandom: Merlin Characters/Pairings: Gwen + Merlin, the beginning of a friendship for the ages Rating/Warnings: PG, mild swearing, badly-run school theater Written for: hs_bingo, prompt "class - drama." Wordcount: 1600 A/N: None.
I always liked the Gwen/Merlin dynamic. The two bounce off each other pretty well in the show and once again you've captured the character dynamic of the show perfectly.
So on the timeline of the AU Gwen and Merlin met here and then they each met Arthur and Morgana respectively? Or was Merlin there when she met Morgana? Sorry about the questions; I just like to keep timelines straight.
Aw, thanks! My favorite thing about this show is the way the characters interact, so I'm glad you find I re-create it.
This happens in the same fall as "Inconvenient Insights" and "Selective Use of Full Titles," so Merlin is just starting to notice Arthur; they become a couple a few months onward. Gwen knows who Morgana is at this point, but they don't actually start talking until nearly a year after this one (the September before "To Adorn You.") A proper timeline's going up as soon as I finish the whole mess. Incidentally, Gwen and Merlin are around fourteen in this, if you were wondering.
Thank you very much; I'm very glad that you enjoyed it.
I love watching/reading Merlin and Gwen interact. They're just so sweet, even when they're not together and have no interest in being together. They're just such perfect friends. And awww, Merlin heading for the theater to meet a guy.
(And I was always kind of intimidated by the tech people at my high school, because they always seemed like the seven impossible deeds before breakfast type. It makes me feel better to think that they might have been panicking up in the booth.)
Thank you! I've been shipping (antishipping? friendshipping?) them as strictly platonic friends since that scene in "Lancelot" when Merlin's trying to play 'who would you rather sleep with?' They're just so best-friends-forever-ish. I'm glad you find I hit the dynamic.
(I never did tech, but a lot of my friends did. I have vivid memories of their similarly vivid descriptions. "DO NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE SOUND CUES, WE KNOW. We've been fixing the program as we run the first act, we're all about to kill someone." I don't think anyone gets through high school theater without a fair bit of panicking, actually.)
At that point, I think I was still shipping-shipping them, but as I fell more in love with the slashy ships and Gwen stopped being all OBVIOUS CRUSH on Merlin, I shifted pretty seamlessly into friendshipping. :D
(Never really did anything related to theater except watch and once sing in the chorus (which uh...kind of put me off ever doing it again), but a fair number of my friends were part of the core group of the drama club, so I did hear some of the panicking. Which put me right off doing it myself. XD)
It is worth the panicking, usually. That, or applause is more addictive than cocaine and we are all total junkies. I am not sure if I'll ever figure that one out.
