Are the Snicket books good? Are they great? The first movie didn't look all that interesting to me, just sort of fluffy kids fun. But that's also how I used to feel about HP, and that got a lot better. So I'm just wondering how good they are. Like, Narnia good? LOTR good? HP good?

Hmmm. They are definitely put in that category by a lot of their fans, and a lot of adults will say they like children's lit and combine all those books together. And I agree it's on that level - PhD theses could be written about the books and they'd only tap the surface of what's there
