Summary: Set after 6x22. God!Cas removes Sam's soul to prevent his memories of Hell from destroying him. Castiel finds that a soulless Sam Winchester is more than willing to give him what his counterpart wouldn't. Before they consummate their relationship, Castiel reflects on how he fell for Sam.
He should not want Samuel Winchester as he does.
Samuel is a tainted and flawed mortal. A God should not want such an imperfect being. A God should not want at all.
Yet he does.
He wants this mortal to be his and his alone. It is not simply lust he feels. Although, Samuel is breathtakingly beautiful in his own warped way. No, he wants to own Sam mind, body, and soul.
He already has his soul.
In order to insure Sam’s survival, he had to remove the torn and tattered soul that Death had returned to him. The memories of Hell would have destroyed him, even if he had been able to temporarily overcome them. He had warned Dean, but as always he refused to listen.
He has to admit that a soulless Sam is a great deal more pliant. Pliant is the wrong word to use. Pragmatic is a more accurate description.
He shakes his head to rid himself of those thoughts. A human gesture, but it is effective none the less. He turns his head to Sam, who is lying bound and naked on the bed, waiting to be claimed.
Observing the hunter, he reflects on how his feelings for the man came to be. Even at the beginning when he thought of him as an abomination, he was fascinated by the younger Winchester. Slowly, that fascination grew into respect. He began to like the hunter, despite his best attempts. As he became more human, he found him attractive and desired him. From there it grew into this constant, aching desire. He did everything in his power, with no success, to rid himself of those emotions. When he was restored after Stull Cemetery, he attempted to distance himself from anything that reminded him of Sam. He failed and made a deal with Crowley to bring Sam back.
He did not care about the power the souls in Purgatory would give him, he only wanted to save the man he came to love. It was only later, realizing that he could use that power to protect Sam and retrieve his soul from the Cage, that he wanted to use the souls.
As humans say, it is water under the bridge now. Sam is here with him and is to love and care for.
