2012 fic round-up

Dec 31, 2012 21:58

Y'all, I have had the most spectacular fic-writing year. I said something like that last year, but this year blew that out of the water. I wrote 135k worth of fic this year (including 15k posted that I haven't yet put my name to); best previous year was 75k. I wrote a whole range of things I'd never have guessed: explicit sex, some real actual kink, some m/m, some f/f, and a threesome. I wrote two fics longer than 20k. I wrote fics for The Vampire Diaries, Downton Abbey, and my Yuletide fandom, all brand-new fandoms, as well as my old standbys.

Below the cut I go into more detail. A LOT more detail. This got long, folks.

Leitmotif(s) of the year:
Hetfic. Shipping - it's been by far my shippiest year. Sam shipping, in particular; I've written him with Jess, Jo, Tamara, and Amy the kitsune. This was definitely the year of the a/b/o, as well as plenty of mpreg, per usual.

My best story of this year:
I am extremely proud of my set of Jo a/b/o fics, These Spooky Old Woods and Too Hot, Too Cold, Just Right. I got at Jo as a character and my perspective of her better there than in anything else I've written, even though the Jo in that universe is not our canon!Jo. I addressed some very prickly stuff relating to gender and sex, some of it in response to popular a/b/o tropes but most of it related more to RL mysogyny and feminism and views on sex and sexual agency than anything fannish. Which all sounds very stuffy and pointed, but I also think I did an okay job of making those things into stories rather than screeds. (Since, after all, I didn't really have any of that in mind when I started writing them.)

I'm also pretty pleased by my deaf!Sam casefic from earlier this year, In a House by the Sea, with Mermaids. I really like the atmosphere in it, the quiet moodiness, the oddball comfort Sam and Dean have managed to find for themselves. And also the mermaid. I'm still pretty darned tickled about that mermaid.

And finally, I am ridiculously proud of my post-apocalyptic roadtrip epic, Long Way Home. It's long and has sex in it and lots of feeeeling and lots of all three characters. Also lots of id material, because "post-apocalyptic roadtrip" is a phrase pretty much designed with me in mind. But that aside, I think it's also probably my fic this year with the most character depth, with the most interesting shipping dynamic, with the most organic and honest development from "not together" to "together."

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Oh, man. Um. The story I'm likeliest to reread on a whim is probably Won't You Be My Teddy Bear, my Gen/Jared werebear fic. Talk about iddy. You've got your arranged marriage and your genderbending and your promise of future mpreg. And, honestly, both characters in it just make me go "Awwwww."

I do love the post-apocalyptic threesome fic an awful lot, too, though.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.
On LJ, probably All the Cool People, my Sam/kitsune!Amy story from spnspringflight. One of my many excursions this year into Sam multi-shipping, with a hard maximum of 2.5k words. This was one of those that definitely benefitted from anonymous posting in a major exchange.

On AO3, the handsdown favorite is What Should Really, Really Never Be, the one where the French Mistake 'verse is a/b/o. It's my second most popular fic in terms of hits, but has a much higher kudos/hits ratio than anything else. I guess people really like cracky a/b/o RPF crossovers. Who knew?

Story of mine most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Heh heh. I should not complain about the response to Who Favor Fire, my Sam/Tamara fic, because what few responses I did get were ecstatic and voluable. That said, after four months it still has fewer hits than any other fic of mine on AO3, including much shorter things in much less active fandoms.

Story that could have been better?
There were several fics this year written under circumstances (read: under a deadline and/or in one sitting) that didn't really allow for as much time and development as I usually like to give things. Specifically, Many Waters could have used more several more passes for character depth (never mind that it's kinkfic, kink should have characterization toooo!), ditto for Women Who Run Away from Home (the Jo+Anna casefic), and Biding Time is less a fic than a collection of fic-like Spuffy mpreg snippets that were never going to coalesce into anything more.

I also wish I'd had the time to develop the Jared/Jensen side of the threesome relationship more in Long Way Home. If I'd had another month in which to edit, that's the most important thing I'd have addressed.

Sexiest story?
For the first time, this year this is actually an interesting question! I would say that the story with the best-written sex is definitely Too Hot, Too Cold, Just Right, with the knotting porn; I'm really pleased with how I phrased things there, with some pretty strong imagery and no more words than necessary.

Actual hottest fic? I have no idea. Feel free to tell me; I am curious! Other candidates that come to mind: Long Way Home, Who Favor Fire, and Many Waters .

Hardest story to write:
In a House by the Sea, with Mermaids was like pulling teeth to write. It was one of those where I'd sit down, write ten words, scowl at what I'd written for half an hour, and then go do something else for a while. I'm not sure what the problem was. It may have been partly because I knew I needed some plot and I didn't have any going in; it may also have been because I was writing from Sam's POV, and I still find him fairly difficult to parse.

The Only Cure for Grief was another doozy; I started it four times and took almost to the end to a) figure out what I was writing, and b) realize it was totally different from what I thought I was writing.

Easiest story to write?
There were several I wrote straight through with basically no wibbling or backtracking. Human Conditions, the Dean+Cas h/c thingy might have been the easiest - I wrote it in about 45 minutes over chat (with bobthemole, who was very patient when I derailed our conversation to write fic for her).

(Don't) Work It, Baby, the fluffy Danneel/Jensen a/b/o D/s, is also a contender - I wrote about half of it in my head, lying in bed one morning. And then I got up and found a notebook so I could write down the other half.

Holy crap, that's wrong even for you
Well, if we're talking "Snick takes her favorite theme too far," then almost certainly Rather Less Yielding Than a Dream. I put mpreg into Downton Abbey, folks.

If we're talking general shock value, though, then I have one word for you: watersports.

Where did you publish/archive your stories?
LJ, DW, AO3, and I had a brief flirtation with ff.net. (Conclusion: way the heck too much work to post, and I can't post my NC-17 stuff or my RPF stuff there. Pass.) I definitely noticed a significant uptick in hits and responses on AO3 this year, and I also read there whenever possible, especially when reading longer things. I've decided I'm posting future big bang fics to AO3 alone - it's too much hassle keeping track of the chapters on both DW and LJ.

Story I haven't yet written, but intend to:
HA HA. SO MANY STORIES. I hereby decline to describe them, because I don't want to jinx. Let's just say I have possible ideas in mind for both spn_j2_bigbang and the Genevieve-centric bang that's afoot, and I also have bunches of things I want to write on the kinkmeme, some of which will hopefully fill in that spnpairingbingo card I recently acquired.

Other things I did this year: I wrote fic for the spnspringfling, rarewomen, spn_summergen, and shipswap fic exchanges. I wrote fic for Yuletide and spnkink_meme (and also posted prompts there for the first time). I recced at rocksalt_recs and spnroundtable. I modded three fic fests: the Het Mpreg Ficathon, the A/B/O Het/Femslash Ficathon, both multi-fannish, and also the Buffyverse Crackficathon. I started a new comm, spn_rpf_het (although in terms of promotion, I'm a terrible failure as a mod :P). I flew out to see
verity, and gryfndor_godess flew out to see me. I went to VanCon.

Goals from last year: Carry on with the knotting AU (yes! wrote a 22k Jared-centric longfic for it). Finish giftfics I am writing for people (mostly? I think?). Finish the winterpocalypse F/G fic (alas, no), the Faith&Buffy fic (yes!), and the Illyria fic (no, and I don't think that one's ever getting finished). Comment on other people's fics in more depth (sometimes). Host another round of the Crackficathon this summer. (Yes!) Write original fic? (No. )

Goals for next year: Write the epic Jared/Gen knottingverse fic (or possibly a series of one-shots instead). Finish anon WIP and the Sam/Jess a/b/o pilot AU. Write something involving a woman for kinkmeme every month (until I get bored of it). Do spnspringfling and spn_j2_bigbang again and do the Genevieve-centric bang. Participate or don't in other fannish events, as I feel like them. Write original fic?

Y'all, I am so proud of myself this year. I really, really am.
