photographers - what do you use to organise your pictures?

1- What software do you use to organise your pics?
2 - Can it cope with jpgs and raw
3 - Is it platform dependent?

I only ask because I have access to Photoshop elements, and Aperture 2 for mac, and also iPhoto 08*.

My Camera - a Nikon d5100 - also came with some software called view NX2, but at this stage I am hesitant to learn a new piece of software ( Read more... )

I am low-tech enough to use manual folders (by year, then month, subfolders for particular events / shoots) I think Sc has a couple of scripts he wrote to automagically rename and file things. That's probably not very helpful, is it? Sorry!

I don't thin that folders would work for me because... snesgirl January 31 2012, 17:27:50 UTC
I currently have more than 11 thousand photographs, and that's only dating back from 2002.
I've always used the default camera photo software or default Operating system image software to collate, edit, and arrange them.

using manual folders with dates is not an option for me due to the size of my library, plus the fact that I'm a little obsessed with applying tags to photographs.

Plus it's about 12 GB of data.

I easily now have about another 5 - 6 GB of photographs taken with my new camera which I haven't added to my existing library because I don't know what system I want to (possibly) become entrenched in - also I have photoshop now, so I need something that archives non-destructive copies of images.

How big is your photo library? Do yo do any editing?

big, but probably not *that* big - I didn't get a digital camera until relatively late in the day and I've not made a systematic attempt to digitise my box-o-print-photos.

I do do a certain amount of editing - if I'm doing serious edits I manually save alt. versions to preserve the originals - but I don't do the tagging thing, at least not on my main library. That's what Flickr is for :D

If you're already embedded in an existing system, I can see why finding something that works with that, rather than needing a lot of re-jigging would be a huge priority!

I just use manual folders - the fact that there are other options is a revelation to me!
