The two tickets appear on the counter, right next to the stack of orders he’s reviewing.
Sonny looks up and sees Brian smiling at him, his blue eyes effortlessly brightening the dim atmosphere of the coffeehouse.
“Brian,” Sonny says tentatively, a little surprised at seeing him here for the third time today. “What are you doing here? I thought you had crew practice.”
Brian laughs and nods. “About three hours ago.”
Sonny rubs his eyes. “Oh, man, what time is it?” After his and Brian’s rock-climbing adventure earlier, he’d returned to Common Grounds to catch up on paperwork before calling it an early night. He’d definitely lost track of time.
“Not too late for a concert, I hope,” Brian says, slowly pushing the two tickets toward Sonny. “What do you say?”
“Uh, Brian-”
“Not again.”
“Huh?”
“You turned me down last summer when I invited you to a concert down by the riverfront, remember?” Brian says. “Come on, you can’t refuse me again. I know how much you love music.”
Sonny stares at Brian but thinks about Will, the way he and Will had shared a nice moment earlier when they’d listened to Will’s playlist.
I make a pretty good playlist, huh?”
“Yeah, you do.”
“Sonny?”
Sonny shakes away the memory and focuses on Brian, who’s now waving the tickets in front of his face. Yes, it’d been nice to talk to Will but that was now in the past, just like his and Will’s passionate but all-too-brief relationship. Brian, on the other hand, is here. Brian is his present and possibly, maybe, his . . . future.
Sonny smiles. “I’ve got to finish this.” He points to the papers. “I’m running a business, you know.”
“You close in twenty minutes,” Brian says, still holding the tickets out to Sonny. “Besides, I already did what you wanted today. Now you have to do something I want to do.”
Sonny smiles wider. He should be annoyed by Brian’s persistence but he’s not. With Will, Sonny did all the chasing and pursuing. It feels nice for a change to be the one being chased after, the one being pursued. He grabs a ticket out of Brian’s hand. “Give me twenty minutes.”
“I might not be able to hear out of this ear for the rest of the night, but it’s worth it,” Sonny says two hours later as he and Brian walk through Horton Town Square. He rubs his right ear. “That was loud.”
Both he and Brian burst into laughter.
“I knew you’d like it,” Brian says, taking one of his hands out of his pocket and gently touching Sonny’s cheek. “You have good taste in music.”
Sonny immediately looks down.
Damn, what did I say? “Sonny, you all right?”
“Yeah, just a little cold,” Sonny says. His face is flushed. “Do you wanna, uh, go somewhere warmer and, you know, warm up?”
Brian bites his lip to keep from voicing his excitement. If he’s honest with himself, he’s not going to deny that he wasn’t wishing for something like this to happen tonight. But he also knows that he won’t be too disappointed if what he’s wishing for doesn’t actually happen again. He meant it when he told Sonny back at the coffeehouse that he liked him and that he wanted to get to know him.
He does. And thanks to the time they’ve spent together so far, Brian already knows about Sonny’s rock-climbing hobby, his musical preferences and genuine belief in love, and the way he’s desperately trying to forget about Will.
That last part Brian can help with. Brian has nothing against Will. Will’s a decent guy. But he’s not right for Sonny. Too passive. Too weak. Too involved with his ex-girlfriend and their baby.
Brian’s not even sure Will loves Sonny as much as Sonny loves him. Twice-no, make that three times-Will has stood aside and let Brian take Sonny from him without so much as a glance or word. Sonny deserves more, better. And he wants to make sure Sonny knows that.
“Let’s go to my place,” Brian says, holding out his hand.
Sonny hesitates for a second-undoubtedly remembering the other night they spent at Brian’s apartment-but then smiles as usual and takes a hold of Brian’s hand.
Sonny exhales as he enters Brian’s apartment building. On the walk over, he’d practically been holding his breath, debating whether he really should be doing this or not. He likes Brian, he does, but everything that happened with Will is still so fresh in his mind. And he’s not just thinking about all the bad that transpired once the baby secret was revealed. He remembers all the good too.
Their first kisses, the dates, getting to know each other’s parents, their first time-
“Here we are,” Brian announces as he unlocks the door.
Asking Will to move in.
Sonny and Brian enter the apartment.
“What can I get you to drink?” Brian asks as he removes his coat. “I’ve got beer, wine, water-”
“Will gave me back his key.”
Brian forces a laugh. “I don’t think I have that.”
Sonny, standing in the middle of the apartment, faces Brian. “The other day he, uh, he stopped by the coffeehouse and returned the key I’d given him.”
Brian stands still, waiting for Sonny to continue.
“He’d moved out all his stuff before,” Sonny says, looking down at the floor, his hands still in his jacket.
“Okay.”
“You think that we should just be friends?”
“Yeah, I think so. I think that’s the best way.”
Until Will returned the key, Sonny had hope that maybe, just maybe, things could be right between them again. How, he didn’t know since neither of them was doing anything to repair the fracture. But still, he had hope. Or maybe it was all just wishful thinking, kind of like it’d been when he first realized he was attracted to Will and wanted Will to reciprocate.
But now, the truth is out there. Sonny Kiriakis and Will Horton are now friends. Nothing more.
Sonny looks up at Brian. “It’s over. It’s really over.”
And before Brian can say anything, Sonny is right there, right in front of him, pushing his mouth against his. Sonny opens his mouth as the kissing intensifies. His mind opens too, concentrating on the present (Brian, Brian, Brian) and forgetting the past (Will, Will, Will). And maybe one day soon, his heart can open up again too.
Is this real? Is this actually happening? Brian’s mind wonders as Sonny covers Brian’s bare chest with open-mouthed kisses.
He wasn’t going to push Sonny to do anything he wasn’t ready for. If anything, Brian invited Sonny out tonight to talk and help him realize that he should move on. But as Sonny’s mouth moves down to his navel, Brian is oh-so-grateful that Sonny seems to have realized that on his own. That’s why Sonny is kissing him, right? And rubbing Brian’s bulge through his pants and unbuckling Brian’s belt and-
“Wait, can we stop?”
Shit. Maybe he hasn’t realized it after all.
Brian sits up halfway on the bed, with Sonny straddling his legs. “What’s wrong?”
Sonny sighs. “This is just gonna be sex, isn’t it?”
Brian collects himself before speaking. He does not want to sound too disappointed. “If you don’t want to do this . . .”
“Brian, I need to ask you something,” Sonny says as he moves up Brian’s body, his legs positioned on either side of Brian’s hips.
“Okay.”
“Do you really want to be with me? And not just because you think you can now that Will’s not in the picture?”
“Sonny, I liked you before Will. You know that.” I’ve liked you for a long time.
Sonny smiles, his teeth on full display. He nods as he looks down at Brian’s chest. His index finger idly draws circles on the breastbone. “I want this to mean something.” He chuckles. “I mean, we both know it’s not love so what is it?” His eyes look directly into Brian’s. “What is this?”
Brian doesn’t know what it is either. All he knows is that he wants it to mean something too. He wants Sonny to know how he feels. He hasn’t liked a guy this much in a long, long time.
Brian puts his hands on Sonny’s hips. “I’m Brian, you’re Sonny, and we really like each other and we want to do amazing things to each other’s bodies to show one another just how much. That is what this is.”
“There you go, being all confident again.”
Brian shakes his head. “I’m not, Sonny, now when I’m with you.”
Sonny swallows audibly. “I don’t want you to be just another guy, and I don’t want to be that for you either.”
“You’re not; you won’t be.”
Sonny grasps the back of Brian’s neck and leans his face closer to his. “Don’t lie to me, Brian.”
“Never,” Brian whispers. He means it, especially with Sonny looking at him like that and expecting more from Brian, more than Will ever gave him.
After a full minute of silence, Sonny smiles again. “Thanks for going climbing with me. And for the concert.”
“Anytime.”
“You mean that?”
Brian doesn’t know what else to say to make Sonny realize that he means everything he says so he shows him instead.
Brian takes the lead. He needs to do this for Sonny, make him feel loved and protected and taken care of. He kisses Sonny as he unbuttons his shirt and helps Sonny out of it. He kisses Sonny’s nose, cheeks, and chin before moving on to his neck where he inhales the musky male scent that turns Brian on like nothing else.
“Lie down,” Brian whispers as he helps Sonny onto his back. He removes Sonny’s pants and then rubs his palm against Sonny’s cock through his boxers. This is for me.
Sonny puts his own hand over Brian’s and they both stroke Sonny until a small, wet spot appears on the shorts. Sonny bats Brian’s hand away and then lifts his hips up to strip himself completely. Brian quickly undresses as well, tossing his clothes into the air, not caring where they land, before he falls on top of Sonny and presses his mouth to his.
He thrusts against Sonny, who moans loudly and breaks the kiss. “You, you okay?”
Sonny looks down at their cocks and nods. “Wow.”
Brian laughs. “I know.” He slightly lifts himself off Sonny to grab their cocks and strokes them simultaneously. He maintains a rhythm, creating intense friction as they both pant. Before either of them reaches his climax, Brian releases them and sits up.
Sonny looks confusedly at him. “Huh? Where-where you going?”
Nowhere. Ever. Brian kisses him gently. “Shh, just hold on.” He grabs a box of condoms from the small table beside the bed. He holds it up. “Is this okay?”
For a second, Sonny hesitates, and Brian holds his breath. But then Sonny nods, his eyes filled with lust and want and need. “Yes.”
Brian puts the condom on and opens a bottle of lubricant, squeezing some onto the condom and then coating one of his hands. He smiles as he opens Sonny’s legs and positions himself between them. “Is this okay?”
Sonny is breathing loudly as he nods.
Brian gives his cock a few strokes to ease the heat he feels as he looks at Sonny, open and ready for him. He can’t deny he’s been waiting for this for a long time. He teases Sonny’s entrance with one finger.
Sonny pushes down onto Brian’s hand. “You, Brian, I want you.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Sonny says.
Holding onto Sonny’s hips, Brian pulls Sonny to him and guides his cock into him, panting loudly as he feels Sonny all around him. ”Fuck.”
”Brian, Brian, Brian,” Sonny chants as Brian begins to thrust. He wraps his legs around Brian’s back and his arms around Brian’s neck. “Yes, yes.”
Brian shuts his eyes as he pushes into Sonny over and over and over. He never thought it could feel like this, feel such a strong connection between himself and his partner. But he feels something and he likes it. He wants to feel it forever. He pulls out of Sonny completely before plunging back into him. The reaction from Sonny encourages him to do this again. In and out. In and out.
“Brian, Brian, look . . . look at me.”
Brian opens his eyes and looks down at Sonny, who is staring at him like Brian is the only person he’ll ever trust to do this to him. Brian leans down as much as he can and kisses Sonny, their kisses wet and sloppy but real. “You are so special, Sonny, you’re so special,” he manages to gasp out before he pushes deeper into Sonny.
Sonny pulls Brian down until he’s flat against him and holds onto him like he’s never letting go. For a few seconds, Brian can’t breathe and he wants to tell Sonny to loosen his hold but then he hears Sonny’s whispers against his ear (I like you so much) and instead drives himself forward into Sonny.
Sonny doesn't even have to touch himself. The friction alone that Brian's body against his is creating is enough to propel Sonny towards his release. Sonny shouts Brian’s name and grabs Brian’s face in his hands, staring at him intently for a few seconds before planting a hard, rough kiss that finally sends Brian over the edge.
“That definitely wasn’t just sex,” Sonny says with a laugh many minutes later.
Brian breathes loudly as he laughs too. “Damn, that was intense.”
“And good.”
Brian rolls onto his side so that he mirrors Sonny’s position. “Great.”
“Amazing.”
“Awesome.”
“You know, I, uh, wasn’t sure about this-about us-but now I am,” Sonny says, grasping Brian’s hand in his.
“So, you’re really ready to . . . move on?”
“I just want you to be happy, you know, even if it’s not with me.”
That’s the last thought Sonny has about Will before he scoots closer to Brian. “Yeah, I am.” He stares at Brian. Brian, who is caring and funny and sexy and honest and everything Sonny wants in a guy. Brian, whom Sonny now knows won’t be a rebound or that guy he hooked up with after Will or just another guy.
This could be something. This could mean something. And Sonny is ready to find out.
