Confirmation isn't necessary. Technically, you have to be a baptized Catholic, you have to believe in transubstantiation (the doctrine that the wafer and wine actually become the body and blood of Christ), and you cannot be conscious of any grave sin since your last confession. My guess is that the number of people taking the Eucharist in Catholic church each week who actually fulfill these conditions is probably very low.
