Um, that isn't universal for Cali. But down in San Diego area you have pretty much 3 types of people: Those who are just relieved to be clear of LA traffic, those who are in the military (these ones usually speed unless drunk), and those who don't dare speed because if they're pulled over they may be deported.

That being said, everywhere except LA tends to have a higher level of driving sanity than I've seen on the East Coast. Combination of mastering the art of merging into traffic and knowing that in many places rude driving may subject one to being shot at. Remember, we also imported the fine art of road rage to the US...

I figured. I've driven around the San Francisco area, and up there they seem more what I'm used to. But here? Just freakish.

Merge? Properly? With courtesy to others? Why would one EVER want to do those sorts of things?

hey, are you the one responsible for sinkholes out there in Cali?
i mean after all -- they didn't have the sinkhole until you went out there... :)

One final comment about this:

Having done quite a lot of freeway driving along the West Coast, my experience has shown that Californians are the "nutty/insane" drivers, Washington drivers are the "fast" drivers, and Oregon has the "fairly tame" drivers. These are all massive generalities of course, but it seems to fit. One minor note - in-state Californians didn't seem so bad. It's the out-of-state Californians that tend to be a bit more wild.

If you thought the California drivers were nice compared to the East Coast folks, come on out to Oregon again and experience the lusciousness of our drivers in comparison.

Huh. People who drive slowly and/or courteously? Is that even possible in this reality?
