Oh my god, this meme ate my entire weekend almost! It's hard! Which I should have known. But I think I finally finished. I'm going to post it before I change my mind on everything.

Oh, so much interesting stuff in the post. But I can't really respond because I have to go spend the rest of my life at the Literary Gothic site. I can't believe I've never come across this before! I am so excited to delve in, thanks much for the link.

I too am a big fan of the Misunderstood Monster, and have been going through a big Frankestein kick for the last year. Oddly enough I've never read the original novel--am finally just about to start it. I'm surprised there haven't been more Frankenstein-inspired works in the last few years - seems like societally we're dealing with so many questions along the same lines, you'd think it would be popping up in the culture.

Ha! Another person sucked into LitGothic. There was a day last week when it was gone for some reason and I didn't know what to do! It's so much fun.

I don't think it's got Frankenstein, now that I think about it, which surprises me. It's got some longer works linked to on Project Gutenberg etc. Such a time suck!

I just recently listened to The Talented Mr. Ripley while I was doing this tedious artwork storage task. Enjoyed it so much! It's brilliant. Right now I'm flashing on how stunned I was at the way she wrote the protag offhandedly mentioning that his parents died in a drowning accident. Right after he drowns his friend.

Awesome website list. Fascinating.

I liked Stand By Me the movie better than the novelette, too. So agreed that short horror stories can be great horror/suspense movies. Rear Window--I just read another Woolrich story (Papa Benjamin) and it made me think of that.

#5, Robin, I think you do recall correctly re: Romeo and Juliet. I'll repost that story, just for you:) It's so sweet.

Agreed on the 'leaving the manor' moment.

I think I might have to check out Possession.

I love that people are liking the website list because my first thought was that I didn't have any!

There are 5 Ripley books at all, btw.

If you like English lit Possession is really fun. Also for me it was funny because it had these women's studies teachers that AS Byatt obviously was familiar with. My college didn't really have women's studies but that's because everything was kind of women's studies--it was a women's college.

Did you like the other Ripley books as well as the first?

I'm selective about which English Lit I have patience for at any given moment (wish I had more patience) but I'm curious about it (Possession) specifically because it apparently does a brilliant job of weaving documents (letters and poems, looks like?) into the narrative.

The first one is something special because kind of his origin story, but I liked all of them. Especially The Boy Who Followed Ripley.

Possession is kind of funny about English Lit departments so it's fun. And you can skip the fake poetry. At least I'm pretty sure I did. Mostly it makes English Lit fun because there's a mystery they're figuring out that's got clues in the poems.

Oh, there are many things that I'd like to comment about, but unfortunately I have no time, so let me just say that I completely agree with you about the ending of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell :)

I did not see that ending coming and I loved it. (Fave moment is still Childermass and the R King!)
