Urahara had missed a lot of Bya-kun's birthdays as well, but in a different way than Yoruichi-san. So he also felt motivated to celebrate in a grand way for his favourite little noble.

Outside the room, banana cake in hand, he nodded at Yoruichi-san with a grin at the noises from within the room. Shifting the cake to one hand he pulled out his NV and got it ready to record. This would be worth saving.

His first day as a professor. The students seemed receptive, though some had informed him that they had taken Professor Aizen's class as well.

Byakuya had merely gritted his teeth and ignored the remarks. Aizen was gone and being angry about it wouldn't solve anything. Instead, Byakuya gave the class an assignment to read a very specific group of poetry.

Maybe Samurai love poetry would settle them down. He enjoyed reading it. Plus, learning about Bushido certainly wouldn't hurt these children.

"Dismissed." He said, then turned his back, straightening the books and papers on his desk. Becoming a professor had seemed simple, but the paperwork was more than he was used to, even as taichou and the Kuchiki.

A reprieve from that paperwork was well on its way. Once the door opened and the first student exited the room, she slipped into a quick shunpo to squeeze through herself. Her hand reached into the small pouch she carried and snapped something up. This was only going to work if she surprised him.

In the one motion, she landed gracefully on his desk and plopped a very garishly-coloured -- honestly, even she thought it was too much -- party hat atop his ever-so-noble head.

"Ah, but Kuchiki-sensei," she spoke the title in very playful fashion, "you don't want a moment of celebrating your birthday with your new students?"

Slipping in behind Yoruichi-san, he was in perfect position to film the (literally) crowning moment. A few students jumped in surprise at finding him suddenly beside them, cake in one hand, NV in the other.

With a bright grin he called out to the students, "Let's have a round of 'Happy Birthday' for your sensei!
Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you!"

As he went on, most of the students reflexively started singing along, looks of bemused surprise giving way to bemused smiles.

"Happy birthday, Byakuya-kun~ (here there was a bit of a muddle as nearly everyone seemed to call him some variation of Kuchiki-sensei),
Happy birthday to you~!"

Ending the song with gusto, he lit the candle on the cake with a flicker of kidou as the class applauded Byakuya-kun.

"Now, blow out the candle!♥"

Startled when Yoruichi dropped onto his desk, Byakuya made an instinctive flinch for the sword that was in his office. He didn't have any idea what she was doing, until the hat landed on his head, and then came the singing.

Oh you hell-cat, he thought, carefully grinding his molars so that he didn't say it out loud. What was it about Yoruichi that made him want to revert to being an angry teenager again?

His expression didn't change one bit, though. No one - save maybe her - would realize that he wasn't nearly as calm as he appeared. Still, he hadn't realized it was his birthday. He hadn't celebrated in... since his wife had died. Time had stopped then for him, anyway ( ... )
