[Flynn is sitting at a desk, not paying attention to the camera. Floating in the air in front of him are the usual forest of holographic displays, and a light blue geometric solid (first stellation of the icosidodecahedron, if you were curious.)]

Diagnostics all clean?

[The floating shape turns into an orange octahedron and answers him in a ( Read more... )

[TELL IT TO RINZLER.]

Heh, yeah.

[Bit agrees with York's assessment, and just keeps repeating "yes" until Flynn pokes it.]

...Most of the time.

Well, it's an existing feature of the world I came from...

[Insert ridiculous Tron technobabble in here until York's eyes glaze over.

Bit chimes in with a "yes!" occasionally.]

[Something about that little being's existence is very comforting.]

Quite the charming little companion.

[Flynn grins.]

They're not bad.

[Bit clearly agrees, and chimes in with a string of "yes"es.]

[Barely contained delight right here.]

You called it Bit. Is that in the literal sense? A binary function?

Reply

theuserabides June 4 2011, 05:42:27 UTC
Yeah, it's a binary digit. One or zero.

Yes.

What is it?

[He is ready to take notes.]

theuserabides June 4 2011, 06:11:21 UTC
A Bit. Binary digit. It can hold one of two values, true or false.

Show him, Bit.

[Bit obligingly demonstrates a "yes" and a "no."]

Neat, huh?

talkingfishbone June 4 2011, 06:17:44 UTC
Totally.

So--so basically it answers yes or no questions.

[Never in his life has he heard true and false referred to as 'values'. Thaaaat's getting written down.

While he waits for a reply, he works out 'binary digit'. Flynn, he officially thinks you're clever.]

[Well, he is, but not because he knows CS 101.]

A bit is a fundamental unit of information. If you combine multiple bits, you can store larger values. With two bits, you can store values up to three, three bits can store values up to seven, and so on.

[Hiccup, how much number theory do you want to learn? Flynn may be overestimating just how much you already know.]

OH LOOK
MORE USELESS SHIT TO POPULATE OUR INCREDIBLY USELESS AND SHITTY METAL INCARCERATION FACILITY
IF MY EXCITEMENT FOR YOUR LITTLE GLOWING BULLSHIT DEVICES COULD BE COMMUNICATED THROUGH SOUNDWAVES, IT WOULD BE THE SOUND OF A MILLION GRUBS SIMULTANEOUSLY BEING STEPPED ON AND STARVED TO DEATH.

[He's not going to sic a herd of Bits on Karkat, but KK doesn't need to know that.]

Bits?

[Flynn's not scared of Castor. He's not even scared of Clu. He's slightly wary of Abraxas.

It's a User thing.]

Bits!
