Not the least because we’ll throw him out the airlock if he does.” Certainly not least.
“I’ll be waiting here with a shotgun if he dares bring you home before midnight.” OMFGs. I cackled at the idea of Billy saying this. It is sooo adorable, and perfectly fits this slightly uncomfortable scenario in his head.
hahahahahahahahaha

I always think there's this dynamic where Billy hears, probably amongst Dee's friends, that Laura is frakking hot but it grosses him the frak out. Like, he knows she's pretty but the idea of her actually engaging in sex makes him die a little inside because she's his space!mom and therefore doesn't have a sexuality. And yet, I think he'd be an A/R shipper. As long as he doesn't have to think about the actual sex...he likes the idea.
Credit to my father for the shotgun line. Sorry, dad, I didn't marry the guy but I got a great ending line out of it! ;)

Even I was a little wigged at first reading anything explicit, or even remotely approaching explicit, between A/R at first. It's still not the most fun I've ever had, but...
Anyway, the point is, I can identify with Billy, and I admire him pulling himself together to say what she needs to hear, and teasing her a bit into the bargain.

Of course, I love the fact that there's lots of Billy and Laura. This playful side of her is wonderful, recently recovered from her illness, vibrant and happy. A bit mischievous. Billy's reaction to her outfit and her subtle teasing is hilarious.
Love "fatherly" Billy here, his observation that he feels like the parent in the relationship, and not for the first time. Also his declaration Bill better treat her well...or else.
Frothy and fun and so well written. I also enjoyed the way you described Billy's duties as her assistant and all the gray areas that have cropped up since the attacks. So clear how much he cares about Laura and vice versa.

I love that last line. How Billy manages to push the disconcerting thoughts/images out of the way and be supportive for his friend.
Now I want to see how Billy and Bill deal with each other the "morning after." :)
Thanks again. This was delightful. ♥ ♥ ♥

Hmmm. Now you have me thinking about how he and Bill would relate to each other after. I think Billy would be happy for Laura but he'd also immediately start thinking about how to help them keep this a secret. I can just imagine him slowly figuring out that Laura knows way, way too many tricks for having a secret affair with the president...
