Judge Alex....Love him!
Jury Duty: To avoid sitting around for 5 days, calling in to see if he was supposed to go in, Hal would call and volunteer, scheduling his day on a Friday. Very few cases are heard on Fridays, so chances of getting on a jury are slim. Very few people are held over the weekend; most are dismissed as having completed their obligation. You might try that - schedule your day to fit your needs. They appreciate volunteers.
