So after days in pain, my parents paid for me to go to the dentist--he was lovely, he got me right in--and after much hemming and poring over 3 x-rays, he pronounced I needed a root canal.

Well, lovely. This will make 5? 6? I've lost track, since my first horrifying experience at 19. I had a broken molar and the pain got to the level that I ( Read more... )

Totally forgiven. If I had the option, I'd opt for sedation dentistry for everything but cleaning too.

Ask em for a side of Zofran to go with it. We give it to people alongside morphine to get rid of the nausea. ;)

Lortab is my friend. And by friend, I mean a friend that makes me disconnected, woozy, and ultimately uncaring of everything except whatever silly tv show I'm watching.

The most recent dentist I had was shocked when he tried to numb my mouth to extract a tooth.
He told me to tell him if I could feel any pain, and he kept giving me novacaine until I was numb. 8 injections later, I was good to go. Halfway through, he had to stop and give me another 4.
The nearest he can figure out, the nerves in my mouth are placed so that they run weird, actually more deeply imbedded than most people's, so it takes more novacaine to numb me, and more to keep me numb.
That, and the trauma of being told by a military dentist at 6 that if I didn't shut up and quit crying when he drilled on my not-numb tooth he was going to have my mom come in and spank me until I did, still send me into a panic attack. Hans had to go with me for the latest appointment.

You wouldn't happen to have some Native American in your heritage, would you? I have the same problems with Novacaine or whatever it is that they use these days; my dentist mentioned that those of us with a tiny bit of such heritage--you know, one good nosebleed and you're out of the tribe, like me--often have strange nerve pathways.

Cherokee...
My mother's grandfather was 3/4's, and her grandmother I think was half on the Campbell side. The Collins side is also has some mixed in as well.
You can REALLY tell in the family pictures... noses and cheekbones. And straight, straight, straight hair.
I take more after the Stacey side of the family in my features though... All Stacey men father a girl first, and then boys. And all of my girl cousins look enough alike to be sisters, with the same weird colored eyes. Been that way for about 6 generations now. That's also the side I get some of my more colorful personality idiosyncrasies from. :-)

Oh Honey! I have such Dentist-phobia, you would not believe it!! We go to the lovely people at Dental Corner, they are awesome and amazing people for white-knuckle patients! My parents went to Dr. Kandy (absolutely love that name!) and can't say enough good things about him.

Okay, now let's talk Lortabs: Here's a fun fact for those at home--it's all about the dosage! I can't take 7.5's at all. I have the same, exact problems with it. BUT, I have no problem at all taking 5.0's and 10.0's. And we are not the only ones with a 7.5 issue. It's a fairly common medical phenomena. Leech is the one who shared that 411 with me. The reasons are unclear, but the problem is there. Can I suggest breaking them in half? Take a half, wait about 30-45 minutes, then take the other half. I think your system might tolerate that better.
