It's Oh So Quiet

Nov 10, 2006 20:28

It's gone still, no more bangs for the last few nights. Aaaand, just as I typed that, someone made a liar out of me. So much for that. New start: end of last week it felt like autumn had finally arrived. The heating was turned on for the first time, another layer of duvet went on the bed and my stripey over-the-knee socks made their reappearance. But Guy Fawkes night (5 Nov) was mild after all and Wingnut and me went out to the fireworks display at Victoria Park. The fireworks were based around a story about an evil emperor (boo!) who subjected his poor peasants to heavy taxes (boo!). Fireworks and pantomime, only here. :-)

Unfortunately, it wasn't that great. I hate to criticise free events, but it was hard to see and hear a lot of the show which was suprising considering the size of the venue and of the audience.

But as we were walking out one of the less busy park gates, we spotted a band playing on top of a red station wagon. Soon, a couple of hundred happy people were dancing along to some impromptu indie pop/rock courtesy of Summer Holiday. The crowd wouldn't let them go, so the band was about to do an encore when a police car stopped nearby to check on what was happening. Everyone went, "oh-oh" (what can I say, UKers and pantomime) and the guy at the desk mixed up an imitation of a siren. The police siren just bleeped back, the crowd cheered and the band did their final song. So in the end, an awesome night assisted by some sensible policing.

(Tonight however, will be a quiet one 'cos I need my sleep after being woken up by a neighbour who'd locked himself out of the building at 4am this morning.)
