Montreal!

Last weekend, we took advantage of Hannah's school being closed for Parent-teacher conferences and took off for a long weekend in Montreal (after booking a first thing Thursday morning conference, of course.)

What a fantastic city!

Thursday was mostly the drive up there, which is not bad from Boston at all, especially when Mr. Man is willing to ( Read more... )

Montreal is great - we've been there twice and enjoyed it.

There are actually lots of "actual" Thinker casts around, depending on how you define "actual." The original one is at the Musée Rodin in Paris, but there are plenty of others cast during Rodin's lifetime.

Neat! I had no idea there were multiples, but I suppose it shouldn't surprise me.

I think it's pretty typical for bronze sculptures (certainly it's typical for Rodin's). Once you have the mold you can cast any number, so why not? For one thing, the large ones are inconvenient to move around the way they do paintings. :)

I was wondering when you were going to chime in about the Rodin, Tool! And yes, most of Rodin (and Camille Claudel)'s works were case multiple times, and many of the original sculptures are in Paris. I particularly like his The Gates of Hell from Dante's Inferno because while there is a huge "gate" carved itself, he also made a lot of smaller studies of the figures around the gate which are just as elaborate. [Tool's aunt is an expert on Paris and has taken us on several personal tours of the museums there, so we learned a lot about the artwork.]

We've also been to Montreal twice in August (sans the kid) and both times were wonderful. We went to the Insectarium and liked it a lot, too. It can be really hot there in summer - it was something like 95 the first time we went there - and somewhat too warm to hike around the gardens, but the second time it was lovely. We plan to take the kid next time and perhaps hit La Ronde, the amusement park nearby. Quebec City is also beautiful - more old-city type of place.
