I learned this when Susan switched phones. (I learned we could keep the old with our first trade-in, but my first Blackberry didn't have wi-fi, so was essentially* useless after that.)

*An actually important related factoid - it will ALSO still make 911 calls. There was a law passed that required that cell phone carriers put through emergency calls even for phones without a plan, ID card, or "apparent" ability to connect [=no bars]. This means that in a power outage - wonder why my mind went there, heh - you can keep fully charged old phones as spares. I still have and still charge all three Blackberrys for that reason. If the old phone has no SIM card you will likely have to tell emergency services precisely where to find you, as it will not register on their location detector, but that's the only catch.

I'm trying to decide what to do with it. Current possibilities involve trading it in (Amazon will give me about 20 bucks for it, Gamestop would give me 10-15); wiping most/all of the apps off of it and keeping it in the car as a dedicated music device; keeping it as a backup emergency phone; or just donating it to one of those services. The previous phones went to soldiers, for example.
