Depending on how this comes out, it could sound really angsty or cliche or whatever but I mean it most genuinely: it could be a coincidence or not, but I feel like since I gave up creative writing devote more time to academic writing, I have lost the ability to understand myself and my own emotions. Keeping up a journal is definitely a way processing your inner landscape. i don't have a facebook account but most of my friends do and it's hard for them to understand the significance of having feedback from private strangers that keep up with your life after a decade of journal writing - which is more profound and significant than bragging about how good your life is or posting something to be "liked".

I agree. I feel like, as strange as this sounds, I am more open with strangers on my livejournal than on my facebook. And I have had this journal for I think maybe five or six years. Granted, sometimes I go on long sabbaticals and have lost a majority of my readers but there are still some who I have been talking to for the entire time.
