Thailand and Mermaids!

An entry devoted to my favorite mythical beings - mermaids!

I'll start with something non-related to Thailand, but its a mermaid and it makes me happy:

This was a recent gift from kumoru XD

I've seen multiple statues and pictures of mermaids since I arrived in Bangkok. (Unfortunately, that includes some that we zoomed by on a bus faster than I could snap a picture.) All the statues from the local shops have been bigger than me.

At the National Palace, I came across a mural that included lots of merpeople. I took some pictures (that I'll upload and add later when I upload pics from the trip), and asked my guide about it later. It was part of the Thai verson of the Ramayana:
The monkey king was trying to build a bridge from India to Sri Lanka (Silyn) where the devil king was. The devil king asked help from the sea creatures (including the merpeople) to destroy the bridge. The white monkey king then took one of the mermaids as his wife (one of many), and the merpeople switched sides, and stopped destroying the bridge. (My guide also said that they have found some archeological evidence for the bridge the Indians tried to build to Sri Lanka in attempts to conquor it, like in the legends.)

Most recent mermaid find:
When I went to the local 7-11 this afternoon to pick up snacks for the train ride to Chang Mai, I found some more mermaid stuff. There were multiple bags of snack seaweed with cute mermaids on them, some that had collectible mermaid charms inside! I now have 3/5 of the collectibles, and I'm hopeing that they have more of that seaweed in Chang Mai. Meanwhile, I have enough seaweed to last me weeks! I also found a small pack of mermaid colored pencils on my way to the checkout - yay, mini collection started!

I'll keep my eyes out for more mermaid stuff here ^o^
