Watching "Silence of the Lambs" right now and when Starling visits Lector for the first time he asks her to sit down and I was eerily reminded of the warehouse scene where John refuses. The whole deduction thing that went on was startling similar to "Silence of the Lambs", too.
So. AU. Where John (in his early twenties) is still at uni and his psychology prof gives him an assignment questioning the aloof, mysterious, highly intelligent Mycroft Holmes (because Holmes fancies the kind of guy John is? Intelligent but ordinary?). Mycroft is in a mental hospital on account of being a psychopath. Is he a psychopath? Is he covering for his little brother who as well might be?
I would love some John/Mycroft UST of sorts, pre-slash would be fine, too, just work in some serious tension. You don't have to base the whole thing on the film but if you want to write them as a film!AU.
Now, run with it! Run with it like a preschooler with scissors!

This was both a brilliant prompt and a brilliant fic. Seriously. As a former psych major and big "Silence of the Lambs" fan, this fic nailed it. Mycroft makes such a perfect psychopath. And the matchmaker part was brilliant! I remember studying those two experiments in school and found them both horrifying and fascinating at the same time. An uncomfortable feeling. Anyway, I'm curious if you researched these anywhere specific or already knew about them. I'd love to read about more psych experiments gone wrong. Do you know of any?

Hah! Thank you so much! I got this comment just as I was de-anoning this story on sherlockbbc, so I'll answer you properly. I'm glad that Mycroft's psychopathy worked; I was uncertain, and you made me feel much more confident in it.
As far as the experiments go: I've taken a bunch of psychology/sociology courses throughout high school and college, so I've had them taught to me a few times over the years. I didn't really research anywhere specific (besides Wikipedia, for details), because I've been totally fascinated by them for a long time. And as for other experiments gone wrong, I am right there with you. I've never heard of any others, but I'd love to read about more.

Seeing the post below about a sequel, reminded me that I was going to say something about a sequel too. I'd love to see more in this universe. The conversation between Sherlock and Mycroft with the Matchmaker comment. John visiting Mycroft again. Meeting up with Sherlock again. There is so much here to explore. I really hope you decide to write a sequel. Or even a series! I'm really craving more psychopath Mycroft now.

hello Psychology A level student who wrote this, you have just flashed the last two years of my life before my eyes in a fun and interesting fashion. I have no idea how you managed that, but kudos to you!

AMAZING. Your Mycroft is quietly chilling without being off-putting, if that makes sense. He has the same strange magnetism that makes Hannibal the most oddly likable character in the series of films (even given his batshit insanity). He's just so impeccably controlled that it would be almost admirable if it wasn't so scary.
I adore how he quietly picks apart John's idealism, and I love even more that John still asks if he can shake his hand at the end. AND OMG. SHERLOCK. MATCHMAKER. YES.
I'll be over here, joining the chorus of voices for a sequel. :D
