Can I just say that you made me laugh out loud in public. Specifically because of: Did Basil lack all taste? Unlikely, Dawson mused, resting on his cane, watching the consulting detective lick a hansom wheel. And: You,” he crowed, pointing at Dawson’s nose, “don’t like Mrs Judson’s crumpets! Or anything she cooks!” “How do you do it?” said Dawson, weakly. Poor, poor Dawson. Oh, and the descriptions of the cheese crumpets are wonderful.

Thank you! I'm happy you were amused.
Writing cartoon mice, and trying to make them cartoon-y, was fun. The descriptions of the inedible crumpets (onscreen, they look like muffins) grew after I abandoned the 221b structure. I'm glad I did.

So charming! I loved how perplexed Dawson was by Basil's apparent willingness to eat Mrs Judson's food, and Basil's deduction. Marvelous sensory details, like the pop of the pea. Seeing Holmes and Watson interacting over the meal was a lovely surprise, and you even incorporated the Bresaola alla Valtellinese!

I thought the original was charming, too. "Mouth feel" made that scene with the pea from Murder by Decree jump into my mind. This was in its first incarnation a series of linked 221b's hopping from 'verse to 'verse, but the cartoon mice were more fun than the rest.

Poor Dawson, at least he escaped Mrs Judson's cheese crumpets for one day!

They're inescapable! still waiting for him when they get back downstairs, only congealed on the plate. Truly horrible.

Maybe "ordering in" will inspire him.

I've never seen the canon for this, but it was absolutely lovely :) Also, between you and Keerawa, I am now hungry.

Then our work is done. So glad you liked it.
The Great Mouse Detective is funny and bright, with a charming little girl mouse as its main POV character. Plus, Vincent Price-voiced villain. Murder by Decree seems to be mainly memorable for the pea scene, but I liked the gentle banter between Holmes and Watson and slightly dotty Donald Southerland is always a treat. It's an interesting contrast to The Private Life, too, though I still can't decide whether or not I like Christopher Plummer's Holmes (yes, I will rattle on about different adaptations. but stopping, now).
