It was heartbreaking, wasn't it? That single tear Ethan cried felt like acid when it dripped down his face. I love his defiance in the face of death. THE LAMB IS DEAD, I AM WOLF NOW. I don't know whether to believe that, or whether that tear was his true soul trying to claw its way back out. Which is the true Ethan now? Is this character even going to survive the story? He might not, you know. Logan could be planning for Ethan to die in some spectacular way, probably close to the end of the tale if that's where he's going. That curse doesn't look reversible, and I doubt even Vanessa's power could even arrest its effects, lovely dream of happiness notwithstanding (that was Lucifer tempting her, after all), so death is really the only way to deal with him. And it would be the classic end to Ethan, since the werewolf always gets taken down by that silver bullet. What can you do with a rabid dog but shoot him? That one glimpse of a murdered world with Ethan standing over it, trembling with lust to kill anything that moved ( ... )

The curse being irreversible would actually make such a death even more beautiful and tragic and apropos, I think. Going out in a blaze of glory because he knows he can do nothing else, and at least he can give his haunted, horrible life a little dignity at the end. Ethan turning on Lucifer and defying the very power that could give him the world** would truly make him the Wolf Of God, self-sacrifice being something that always gets Jehovah hot and bothered. Hell, that's probably the reason he IS the Lupus Dei, as far as the Divine Powers are concerned. His older brother didn't get the job done, so now he has to take up the burden. Hm, imagine a religion springing up in his wake...

**I'm suddenly minded of David Warner's wonderful in Cast a Deadly Spell: "A world of the unburied dead and a sky black with ashes. It'll be a blasted maimed planet, but he'll be the most important person in it." LOVE that movie, so snarky.

The last time I came across a character as compelling as Ethan was the HBO series Rome. That series had the same kind of thing going: incredible acting talent, amazing production design, scripts that were a fucking artistic marvel. Another cultured, literay, witty series, with profound depths. Oh, and lots of sex and violence. LOTS. (Though according to one expert on Rome who consulted on the show, not enough sex and violence. Those kooky Romans!)

With this role, Josh has finally grown up as an actor. I've never seen this kind of subtlety and layering in his performances before. He's clicked into this guy in a glorious way, and it is beautiful to watch.

*sigh* I'm just so goddamned PROUD of him. I knew that gawky kid would make it (if he could just keep from becoming a complete pain in the ass). I feel so amazed and blessed to have watched his evolution from the very beginning, before anyone knew who he was. I hope I get to tell him one day.

I wish now that I'd actually talked to him, but that's Monday morning quarterbacking. What the fuck was I gonna say to a 19-year--old kid? I have a vague memory of him asking me where the office was the first day of shooting, but other than that, I don't think we passed more than three words the whole time I worked there, two of which were probably "hey". Still, it's been such a delight to watch him mature, especially out of that era of SHIT movies he was making when he first hit big. The best thing he ever did was leave Hollywood.
