Strange Fortunes

Occasionally I run into stealth restaurants.  They're visible from the street; what I mean by stealth is the cuisine-within-a-cuisine.  I mostly seem to find this with generic-seeming Chinese restaurants, which have one page in the back devoted to what is clearly the chef's One True Cuisine.  The best Thai restaurant in the area went by some vague ( Read more... )

During my vegetarian trip to Malaysia, I found the overuse of fake meat to be really annoying. I want vegetables in my vegetarian food, not chunks of imitation dead animal.

Around here, it's more the other way round -- restaurants (asian or otherwise) that will have a pile of things on their menu, but the customer who orders off the beaten path may be taking a terrible chance. (A little like the old greek diner menus that listed all manner of hauteish cuisine that no one ever had the temerity to order)

I live in a pretty good restaurant town, except that they mostly close at 9-9:30. The Greek diners have Italian dishes that are also good. The generic diner has grilled haloumi, and a classy bronzini? fish that's tasty.

"You have a pair of shining eyes." I don't know, that just seems a little ominous, like they covet my eyes.

They didn't specify that it was your *face* that had the shining eyes, now, did they? Have you been keeping that extra pair of eyeballs in the eyeball-keeper part of the fridge so they don't spoil? :)
