Recs and fictionalized writers

I've stopped reviewing Dexter and will stop watching once this season is over, but may I say, apropos the latest ep: 1.) Bad idea, writers/producers. Really bad idea. And 2.) Most unrealistic therapist ever.

On to actual reviews and more enjoyable fandoms. First a vid rec: Virgin is a fantastic evocation of Antony, Vorenus, Rome and Rome ( Read more... )

(1) YAY Antony and Vorenus!

(2) HOW is there a movie where Olivia Williams plays Jane Austen that I haven't seen? I need to remedy this.

It was already in my Netflix queue, so I might have found out about it and then forgotten to watch it. . . will have to remedy that, sounds great.

Finally got around to watching Dexter (funny how I keep pushing it back further every week), and I'm not sure I'd say that the idea is bad so much as the execution. As creepy and horrifying as this direction is, it's not at all untrue to the character. By which I mean that I think there has always been a grain of truth to this theory, at least in the sense that Dexter and Deb's relationship is unhealthy and damaging to her (if only because he's the reason that all her other relationships have been poisoned), and that under bad enough circumstances, with other options for healthier relationships having failed, I can see Deb taking this route. But that requires a show that is willing to commit to this story and become as creepy and horrifying at it requires, and that's not what Dexter is right now. To put it another way, I can see Deb going down this road last season when she was in a very dark place, but workplace stress shouldn't be the trigger, and either way there would have to be a lot more work on her character than either the ( ... )

Hm, I'd say Anton and Lundy are the exceptions. Neither relationship ended for Dexter-related reasons. Although you could say that Deb might not have fallen for Lundy in the first place if she didn't have Harry issues, and she has Harry issues because Harry was focused on Dexter, but still, Lundy himself was not damaging to her. The first time their relationship ended was played as an empowering moment on her part, and the second time was due to Christine shooting him. Incidentally, if we're talking about relationships of Deb which Dexter poisoned, of course to me to this day the most irritating missed opportunity is to give Deb the realisation process, after finding out that Dexter and Rudy were brothers, that Dexter is the reason why Rudy/Brian became involved with her and put her through the whole engagement charade.

Anyway, I would agree that some very good writers could do something extraordinarily creepy and yet ic and good with this direction ( ... )

Lundy is a strange case, because as you say he came into her life because of Dexter and she was drawn to him because of the damage Harry and Dexter had done to her self-esteem (and because of the number Brian had done on her in order to get to Dexter - which, by the way, I'm pretty sure both Deb and Dexter acknowledge when she confronts him about his and Brian's relationship at the end of the fourth season). But on the other hand, he was very good for Deb. I do, however, feel that Dexter is to blame for the way that relationship ended, because if I'm not mistaken he knew who Trinity was well before Lundy was murdered, and kept him alive in order to learn from him. If Trinity had been in prison, Christine wouldn't have seen the point of killing Lundy.

Anton is probably the one relationship in Deb's life that had nothing to do with Dexter, where the attraction wasn't rooted in psychological issues caused by Dexter and Harry, and whose failure was entirely down to Deb. No wonder I liked him the best of all her boyfriends.
