The Great Wide Open

We had a great day yesterday. Needing to get out (me especially...working from home gets to me after a while), we decided to take a trip up to Niles to hit REI for some camping gear and Bloomingdales for new kitchenware. The large fry pan I use has bowed over the years, and everything drains off to the edges, leaving the middle to overheat and burn ( Read more... )

Hello. Please forgive the intrusion but I was talking to road_trip_judi today and she gave me your LJ info and suggested I talk to you about how to make good camping coffee. I'll be at Wellspring this year and was wondering how I am going to survive without my organic french roast (LOL)! I think we may actually have met at Summerland last year, although I was so hung over that weekend I doubt I made a great impression! I'm Rodney Cox's wife, from Shining Lakes Grove, btw.

Anyway, any tips you could give for making good camp coffee would be greatly appreciated. We do have a propane stove, so that's not a problem. But I am unsure about what kind of brewing device to use, etc. We are planning to go to Cabela's in a couple weeks (like an REI store) so I can get stuff there.

Previous years I have always depended on the kindness of strangers (or the hospitality's coffee pot), but this year I am determined to try to camp authentically and use that stove...

Hi, Lisbet - yes, I remember you from Summerlands!

The best advice I can give about good camp coffee is to buy a French press rather than a percolator. REI does have one or two, so chances are that Cabela's has them as well, but typically you'll find a better selection at Target or a superstore like it.

The tradtional coffee presses are pretty small capacity, and, but you can find larger ones like this one. I recommend getting one made out of Lexan or heavy-grade plastic for durability when camping - the glass ones are just too fragile ( ... )
