No Merlin Soundtrack again.

I emailed Rohan Stevenson and James Gosling a couple of days ago asking if they knew of any plans to release a soundtrack for Merlin this year - I missed one last year and hoped maybe they'd release one for series 3 and 4 this year.

Rohan Stevenson's reply:

There are no plans to do a CD for Merlin 4 and in fact we are not contracted to do the music ( Read more... )

Wow - I wonder how those guys felt about being thrown over but still having all their music used? :/ I know Merlin had to cut costs this year, but still.

They're probably not happy about the loss of opportunity for new music, but remember that if it's their music being used/recycled they will still get paid for the use. I don't know how the industry works in this regard, like whether they would get any special payments for the initial creation, sort of like an advance for a book, which would mean creation of new music is more lucrative. But they will certainly get royalties for any use of their music, and depending on their contract, perhaps for rebroadcasts/syndication of the show now and in the future.

Now that is very interesting!

There has definetely been some new music hasn't there? Although I have recognised old themes.

I wonder who is the new guy. On the one hand is good on the other I can't help but feel for the poor credited composers.

Yeah - they've brought a solo guitar in on one piece, which is definitely new. And then there's the coronation music. Which. Wow. *want*

I don't know how to find out... It's not on IMDB, and I wouldn't know where to start apart from maybe emailing the BBC or Shine. =/

The new guy sounds pretty good but I'm sad that they didn't use the old composers.

Interesting. I wonder why they would do that?

I've been meaning to ask you for a while since I know you know about the music on Merlin: do you know what the music used in this scene is? Does it have a name from a previous soundtrack or is it something from s3 or new for s4?

Ah! This music! I think it was used in s2 - the only ep I can specifically remember at the moment is in The Last Dragonlord. And it's not on any of the CDs or any of the composers websites to download. )=

The vocals towards the end of the clip when Arthur and Merlin are talking has been bugging me. It sounds so similar to some of the pieces actually available to us, but I haven't had time to try and find the actual track. I think it might be from the same track as the one above, but I'm not sure.

I really love that bit of music. They used it again in last week's episode I think. I shall just continue to call it 'Merlin and Arthur love theme' which is what it's called in my head!

Me, too.

Actually, the vocals are used in 2x13 as well - Merlin telling Balinor he'll take him to Ealdor. But it really does sound like some of the themes we can already get. still not completely sure I need to sit and listen to them at some point because it's getting annoying now. =)
