Jonas supposed he could have gone and explored the island today but, without a map, he'd been too afraid of getting lost in a place he barely knew and then having no idea who to call for help or even where to call for help. So, he'd stayed in, devised a plan. He'd make his own map, with landmarks he'd understand and he'd do it day by day. Small ( Read more... )

In his concentration, he'd almost forgotten the door was open. Upon hearing someone's voice (he didn't recognize the voice but that wasn't all that unusual), he looked up, pen stopping it's path against his notebook paper.

"Hello," he said, giving the girl a small smile. He didn't know what next to say because he wasn't sure who she was or what she wanted so he went with with a polite, "How are you?"

"I am," he said, keeping his book opened but placing his pen carefully down on the top of the notebook. "Jonas, hello. And no, I was just reading and taking down a few notes. It's not that important and it's nothing that can't be completed later."

He had so much of it to do that he knew he'd have to pace himself, prioritize, make sure he didn't try to do it all in the first week.

"I am new," he said, nodding. "I just arrived on Saturday in time for the very large picnic."

Sometimes you had to leave the house (or room as the case may be) for supplies. It was an unavoidable part of being a stupid human with a stomach that needed to be filled. Plus there was the caffeine addiction.

Her arms were full with cans of Mountain Dew, bags of chips and pretzels, some candy, and a pizza balancing on one outstretched hand. "Hi Jonas!" she said through the mass of crinkling packets and went to set everything down on her bed.

"Did you need help?" Jonas asked, scrambling off his bed without waiting for an answer because that was a lot of stuff. "Hello! You've brought back a lot of things."

"I did!" she agreed and offered him the pizza. "Here, hold this." She used her other hand in the meantime to place the soda on the bed. "I thought I'd get some snacks we can share, but then I couldn't decide what to get and I didn't know what you liked, so I got some of everything."

The smells were unlike anything he'd ever smelled before and, as he took the pizza box from her, he was almost too intent on the smell to notice the warmth on his hands just from holding the box.

Poor boy, pizza was almost exotic to him. He couldn't remember anything like this.

"That's all right," he told her once he'd gotten his mind focused back on her. "I don't really know what I like so it's not surprising that you don't either."
