After 6 weeks I've finally finished Bob's Spitz's masterful biography of the Beatles. I, personally, do not consider myself a Beatles fan, but my fascination with them was peaked by an excerpt of this biography in Reader's Digest. I've been reading about the Beatles since 1966 and this
book is badly edited, full of factual errors (the photo
section alone is so full of mistakes it's an embarrassment),
and written in such an inflated style all I could think of
Albert Goldman's horredenous Lennon hacket job of the
early 1980's. Spitz didn't speak directly to any of the
Beatles or their inner circle and he blantantly rips
off a much better writer who did (Hunter Davies) for
most of the early history of the band. Check out some
of the Amazon reviews for a better tally of the problems
with this supposed "tome."

Okay... So not quite as masterful as I had hoped? Which is a shame, since I very much enjoyed reading it. Is this what I get for cheating on my strict diet of fiction?
I no longer have the book available (it's back at the library), but Spitz quotes both John and Paul about the Davies book as being more mythology than fact. Crafted to protect the innocent? If that's not the case, perhaps next time I feel the need for nonfiction I'll check it out.
