My birthday is December 15. If you have been following the show (!), you know that every year I ask a birthday question. Here is this year's question.

Have I ever taught you anything? Or, to put it another way, is there anything you have learned from me? It doesn't have to be a specific skill.

I've learned some techniques about being on panels and especially moderating them from you.

Is there anything you are good at that you would like to teach me? Or show me?

If you were interested, I could teach you how to spin fleece into yarn, or show you various techniques and materials. But only if you were interested, because I hate to bore people by prosing on about my own interests.

Ooh, happy birthday!

Alas, having only met you once and that briefly, I can't say that I learned anything in particular. Nor have I got much to offer--the only thing I've ever been exceptionally good at is making stories, and you have far better people for me to look at for that! Unless, I suppose, you are really really interested in making Victorian seed cake.

Should you find yourself looking to wander the Welsh coast, though, there are plenty of things I would show you! Ruined castles and hidden lakes and mountains where the mist clings like gasps of breath from ghosts, empty cottages and old hiding places and cheerful pubs (because it can't all be beautiful desolation, all the time!).

And yes! Knowing you has taught me some interesting things about publishing--as well as how to be oneself in a complex world. Should you ever make your way to Glasgow, I'd love to show you around, particularly in the West End, provided they haven't completely wiped out Otago Lane by that point.
