Um, so. This year I may actually give a damn about the Oscars. I have never before given a damn about the Oscars. In fact, most years the Oscars go by without my even noticing that it has happened--hell, if you'd asked me a month ago, I couldn't have told you during which of the four seasons the Oscars took place! (Answer: Winter, apparently. Don't

Yes, generally. It's been cold the last couple of days, but that's for values of cold meaning "wear a sweater" to us and "go to the beach" for hardy Midwesterners. And sometimes it's flat-out hot - that's why they're often in sunglasses.
I still don't understand how the voting works
Everyone who's a member of the Academy nominates for Best Picture and in their area of membership, and then votes. So actors nominate/vote for actors, directors for directors, etc. Disney Guy, who's an animator, nominates and votes for animation and for Best Picture, so December he starts getting boxes and boxes of screeners, which are the films the studios send out "for consideration" for Academy nominations. He & his husband watch virtually all of them - they take the Oscars VERY seriously since it's both their industry and something they really love. And it's fun, too - we get together, make potluck supper, and watch lots of movies in Dec and Jan...

Cool, thanks for explaining! I didn't realise there were so many people involved in the voting. I'd always assumed it was a bit like the Olympics, with a (mysterious, never seen) panel of judges.
So if you've seen all the nominated movies, which ones do you think will win awards? Which ones do you want to win awards?

It's one of the reasons it's such a big deal: everyone knows it's their peers doing the nominating/voting. And the Best Picture noms were really complex this year: normally they just write in their top five, but this year they had to choose ten *and* rank them in order of preference, which opens up the contest quite a lot and gives people, too, the chance to add things they don't think are serious contenders but liked anyways to the list. So that's how films like Inception made it in - SF doesn't usually get into peoples' top 5.
I think I've seen some but not all; I suspect The King's Speech, which really was excellent, will win; I also like The Kids Are Alright but not as Best Picture, and the same with Winter's Bone. I didn't like Inception (sorry, Arthur/Eames shippers!) and haven't seen Black Swan. I liked Social Network, though, more than I thought I would...
Which ones do you want to win awards?Oh, I don't know. I'm not emotionally involved with any of them ( ... )

Oh, so THAT's why everyone says, "I'd like to thank the Academy..." I thought it was just a general, "I'd like to thank everyone who's been involved in helping me get here" -- which I'm sure it is also, but...
