Last Night's Slam

Aug 13, 2009 10:13

I won (tied) the slam last night!

I had a real itch during NPS that didn't get scratched and I haven't won a WB slam for a long time (mostly because I haven't been in them, but when I was, I wasn't doing the do).  Yesterday I said to hell with that, buckled down, wrote new work, edited old work, timed it, got it in my mouth before I actually got ( Read more... )

writers block poetry night, slam scores, slam

Re: ties. I think what we did last night was fine and dandy. I think it's a rare occurence.

The first round had some very low energy, we changed that significantly in round two. The room was bouncing.

I suspected the first piece was about a mentally challenged person. Well done.

I'm not technically against ties. I just wonder when the scenario would be bad, and that's what I'm trying to navigate. I'm bad-ass enough to just say, "tough", but if tehre is a political way around something, I'll at least look for it.

Nor am I, but if it comes to a final and only one person can win there should be a plan in advance. Say last night was the IWPS final and you and Louise tied, what then?

In that exact scenario: We play Scrabble.

I think what we did last night was cool too.

But I think we've had ties in preliminary bouts before and handled it the same way. Except there was a slam off once a long time ago at Skambo, as I recall.

How would a slam off be handled if, say for example, there were a tie for the 1st slot at the iWPS or WOW grand slam? What's possible? Death match? Haikus? A 3 minute round?

I shouted out Haiku Deathmatch last night but no one paid attention.

This is why you should always carry around haikus in your backpack/head.

I've heard that louise is pretty cut throat, like taking eraser's to other people's poems to throw them off and stuff like that...

I heard once she inserted a Yellow Pages Ad into a poet's page... Man, that's dirty...

You're lucky you got out alive...

Make peace with it.

It's just a matter of time.

I was nervous last night. I haven't MC'd in a while, number one. But the energy during open mic and round one of the slam was so low. I was really confused. But, like Ed said, the energy skyrocketed in the second round.

It was a good night. Even at it's lowest (and it's not like the people were dead or anything), the energy was always positive.

It was funny watching you treat new regulars like new arrivals.
You been gone too long, sis. Cut it out!

That IS funny b/c I already knew that I wouldn't know the new regulars! I was making an effort not to say, "I don't recognize this next poet. S/he must be new to WB." Oh well!
