Michelle Wie makes a good point here. Men shouldn't be allowed to enter LPGA tournaments (obviously referring to Jean Van de Velde's 'attempt') since it is called the 'Ladies' Professional Golf Association, but women should obviously be allowed to enter PGA events since there is no mention of 'Men' in Professional Golf Association ( Read more... )

I find it amusing that women sometimes fight gender inequality by creating even more inequality.

Whilst there's still a lot of areas where men dominate for no discernably good reason, women seem to react by not only fighting for more equality in those areas, but also by creating inequalities in other areas.

Sports is one good example: on the one hand, there are sports like Formula 1 where there's no reason why women shouldn't be able to compete alongside men, but on the other hand, there are hundreds and thousands of women-only sports clubs, while virtually none for men. My local pool back in Hammersmith had women-only sessions, but no men-only sessions, for example.

Similarly, there are plenty of women-only church groups, but very few men-only church groups. And as the Promise Keepers showed, if any man dared start a men-only church group, a lot of people would whine, whereas women-only church groups are apparently fine.

Well, there are little to no men-only things for one simple reason: some people say it is sexist.

Most people really wouldn't care, but there will always be a person who will make a stink about it, and as soon as they start tossing out words like 'sexism' and 'discrimination', everybody takes notice. I'm all for gender equality, but I don't really like someone making a stink where there really doesn't need to be one.

Don't get me wrong, with the above example I definately agree that the PGA has issues regarding discrimination (*remembers the whole Tiger Woods thing a while back*) and that any person who can qualify should be allowed to compete. Likewise I thought that Van de Velde's stunt was lame, but I don't see any reason why he shouldn't - aside from risk of public ridicule - be allowed to compete in the LPGA, and Wei's comments were just unnecessary.
