[Spoiler (click to open)]For nearly half-year, ONI had kept him on Earth as they questioned him about everything that had happened after he entered the Portal, as they tested him to see what the AI Librarian had done to his DNA on Requiem, as they had determined whether or not a Spartan-II was still qualified to be out on the battlefield.
When he had been with the admiralty or the medical staff, it had been easy for him to focus on their questions and instructions. But, at night, when he had been alone --painfully alone-- he had been unable keep the ghost of Cortana away.
Sometimes, he had heard snippets of old conversations. Other times, he had seen an image of her, hand on hip, giving him a customary smirk. But then, there had been some late nights when he had been exhausted from dealing with the bureaucracy of the UNSC that he had been able to feel her touch on his chest, seeping through the layers of armor that should have protected him.
He hated those nights.
