Bowie

14th August 1987 Cherie and I went to see Bowie for the first time. I'd fallen in love with Bowie in Labyrinth, and listened to Don't let me down for the first time on the trip down to Portland as Cherie had bought the album. I found him endlessly fascinating, even as a confused mess. Weirdly, I was never fully convinced he was entirely human, and had a long-standing wish to see him play the Doctor at some point. (Possibly one reason I find Capaldi so compelling is that that Scottish nerdpunk fanboy of my heart has openly acknowledged his Bowie influence and has an otherworldy aspect of his own. I probably shouldn't admit that outside of my very-small-these-days fandom circle, but there you go.)

I'd heard about ill health in recent years, including at least one heart attack, but was unaware he'd been dealing with cancer. I'll just have to give my all-too-usual-now response of "Fuck cancer." *sigh*

I must grab the "Blackstar" CD at my workplace before it sells out completely and becomes a massively-overpriced collector's item...

Yeah I liked the Capaldi connection, though I don't think of Bowie as Grumpy at all ;)

I was totally unprepared for it. I'd heard about the heart attack too. But with the album release all seemed good. That he would always be there coming up with kooky new music for us. Didn't realise he'd done it as a goodbye till yesterday.

I just bought the digital version. But I recommend it. I really like Lazarus. Listened to it over and over yesterday.
