loupnoir wrote about hummingbirds in her garden. This reminded me of an unusual sighting a few days ago. There are no hummingbirds in Germany, but we saw something on our balcony that could hover in the air, fly forward and backward, and used a long proboscis to feed from flowers, much like a hummingbird ( Read more... )

We also have this moth. It's lovely to watch. Some day, I'd like to see a luna moth, the huge light green one, where it's alive, not pinned to a display.

That is really interesting. I've never seen anything like that before. Arizona is chock full of hummingbirds (11 native species) but I don't believe we have anything like this moth.
