I am so fucking sick of people acting like it's a crime to not like Andrew Lloyd Webber. And what's worse, if you like Stephen Sondheim then they automatically assume your reasons for not liking Webber are somehow connected. As though the idea that you could possibly just not like the music is unfathomable ( Read more... )

I think that "Bounce isn't about a talking train" is a good enough reason to pick it over Starlight Express. Also, I saw Bounce, and it wasn't half bad. My parents, who see and enjoy musicals with me, have seen Starlight Express and said they almost walked out until they decided to find the whole thing funny.

I think every musical theatre fan has gone through a Webber phase. Then, some of mature to the Sondheim et. Others phase. Also, it's just said, because shows by ALW and others who write the big spectacle shows are the reasons musicals I like get kicked off Broadway pretty soon after they open. Stupid tourists.

XD

Yeah, I have the CD for Bounce. Is it on the same level as Sondheim's other stuff? Not in the least. However the music is pretty good and the plot isn't bad. Starlight Express...*shudder* I tried to get into it, but it was too hard. And the whole "it's a children's show" thing is crap, because I usualyl love children's shows.

And yes! Broadway is now a theme park. It's "Oh look, a chandalier fell! A helicopter is on stage! She's flying!" rather than "Wow, this music makes me feel something. I can tell the composer really put his soul into it."

Blah.

I agree. Like I said on that particular thread, I don't love Sondheim or Webber but I tend to like Sondheim more. I literally can't stand any of Webber's shows but really enjoy Into the woods. Does that make me less of a musical enthusiast? No. Do I think people should love one and hate the other? No. It's only natural that when given two choices, people will prefer one. It's just the way the world works. I'm not going to go around blasting people for liking/hating Sondheim and I'm not going to around blasting people for liking/hating Webber either. It's about personal choice and there's really nothing anyone can do about that. Same thing for particular shows.

I may not know as much about musical theater as you do but 'I know what I like' and what I DON'T like his ALW. He's really overrated in my opinion. CATS...*shudders* I hate that musical SO MUCH.
