Since maybe my late teens, portal fantasy has been one of the fantasy types I can name offhand that I absolutely will not try. With a few rare exceptions along the Pamela Dean lines, it feels like starting with a cheat too big to swallow, or like a "let's pretend" where reality never quite fades after such a blunt, 4th-wall smashing beginning.
