I've been talking to a couple of people (including individuals not on this continent) about the possibility of organizing an on-line con. What with the hike in gas prices, and how that is going to effect everything else, some of us who have trouble traveling now are not going to get out of town at all for the forseeable.
Before we get into heavy planning and so forth, I think it better to pause and find out if there's any interest at all?
The idea would be to hold it maybe mid-January, which is 'bitter' weather here in North America and Europe, mid-summer in Oz but between most of their big cons. We could post a schedule ahead of time and every day in a central place (like the Bittercon community) but host panels on people's journals, which would run for 24 hours, permitting everyone around the world to get a chance to chime in.
In addition, maybe some realtime chat--I want to talk to the guys at SFF.NET about that. They're always helpful and they fully support genre in whatever form.
Two things I'd like to do, if possible: get some streaming audio (or at least podcasts) though I haven't the faintest idea how to do that, but I do know who to ask on the latter, and also, if someone knows a Big Name or two or ten to ask to participate, that would be swell, too.
I didn't give much of a thought to the money end of things--I like the Net being free--but on the other hand, if we do open for donations, those could be put toward the tech stuff, like the IRC and the podcasting, etc, if we do arrange it.
But there's no use in doing the work for something like this if no one is interested. So . . . speak up, do you think this might be something you'd participate in, come a weekend in mid January of 2009? If so, what would you like to see? Volunteers for things would be awesome, too, if it looks like more than ten people have any interest.
