Some of you may have noticed that I've been turning up to the pub with oil under my fingernails, or muttering about the non-availability of certain obscure bits, or just smelling faintly of industrial degreaser.

'Why?' I hear you ask...

That is a pretty crank!!

It's a nice looking bike all round.

Cheers! (Thought that might appeal to you, don't know why ;-)

I bought the crankset for my hybrid originally (it's actually a triple) but the bolts it needed to fit the small ring turned out to be very non-standard indeed, so eventually I said cojones to it and pressed it into service on the singlespeed.

It looks nicer still with the chainring on the right side but if I mounted it like that the chain would fall off ;-)

You could have got one with gears for that price ;-P

Yes, and front and rear suspension and its own gravitational field...

See, you can tell I'm not a real bike geek, I haven't weighed it yet ;-)

But you've obviously had a lot of fun :-)

I've had no idea what any of that meant, but you do realise the phrases 'industrial degreaser' and 'singlespeed-specific axle slots' has just made Glitterybint go a bit funny...

Now look, I did explain this...

and 12 inch wrench...

Dave, is any of this actually true, or was it just written for my benefit?

It's all true! You can see the wrench in the photos, propping up the bike ;-)

I'm speechless. I guess I'm just wondering how much meccano you could buy for £160 and whether it would give yoiu the same level of satisfaction :-P

Well that £160 was spread over several years and represents everything bar obvious 'consumables' like cables and chains. A broadly equivalent new singlespeed would set you back £4-500, so not bad really.

I don't think you'd get that much Meccanofor £160 either ;-)
