Try this tutorial, under the layout tag. You won't need the instructions on changing the header image.

I'm such an idiot, I saw that post but stopped reading because it was based on headers!! Getting a bit fristrated by that point I think!
Thank you so much, I got it to work, just had to make one concession and have my sidebar on the right instead as the entries wouldn't stop overlapping when it was positioned on the left.
