Balcony garden (Apparently I'm feeling chatty)

I can't remember why now - I imagine it was something about finding projects that make me feel positive about my environment and my life. This year I decided to try to make my balcony garden look... more like something a gardener would make, and less like something a farmer would throw together without knowing anything about pots or flowers. My dad used to get all his seeds and vegetable sets from a family run feed store, until it closed down. This nursery reminded me of that place, a little. :)

Thanks!

Enjoy! Gardening can be VERY rewarding. I only have containers as my back garden was concreted over by the last owner :-P At least I don't have a lawn to deal with!

That is a nice thing in a way -- lawns are very sapping in terms of energy (yours) and resources! Though something more permeable than concrete would have been nice, I suppose. What do you grow in your containers?

I've had all these pots on my balcony for eight years, and it was only when vegetables didn't do well that I decided to try a few flowers just for the sake of being pretty. No, wait -- my first flowers were actually because I wanted a viney screen from my neighbors, and the pole beans I'd tried previously didn't do the job. So I tried morning glories, and I was so delighted with the blossoms, I thought I'd plant a flower every year. But this is the first time I've ever tried to make the whole area look nice. :)

Oooh, I love morning glories. I planted them to screen the side of a porch from the street once, about a million years ago. The only problem was that they drew huge numbers of bees.

They're ridiculously easy to grow, too! Hard to stop, in fact. I had them coming back from seeds that had dropped, two years after I stopped planting them. :) I'm glad they were in pots or they might be covering my building like kudzu by now.

I wish I had your skills with duct tape and Gorilla Glue. I'm utterly useless at doing anything. I love the look and sound of your garden, but my favorite picture has to be those long gorgeous kitty whiskers.

Heh, I don't know if the duct tape and Gorilla Glue ability should be called skills so much as... the tendency to make do? See Epic Kludge. *g*

Thank you - the kitty whiskers was not even a photo I intended to take, but I had the lens focused at the right distance and there he was.

"** Am I the only person who sees the phrase "better myself" and thinks of the Motown girl group chorus from Little Shop of Horrors, "Better ourselves? Better ourselves? Mister, when you from Skid Row, ain't no such thing." ...and then the best musical number of the whole production, "Downtown." Anybody?"

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. I also can never think of the dentist without the song.

"Want some nitrous oxide? Suit yourself."

Hee, I'm so glad I'm not the only one!
