Second woman "rabbi" in France

Aug 03, 2007 18:48

Celia Surget became yesterday the rabbi of a "Liberal" (French equivalent of Conservative I would say) shul in Paris. 17 years ago the first one, Pauline Bebe, was ordinated.

Surger's vocation was born "during a Catholic mass". She wanted to do "like the priest, but for the Jews".

13 000 families in France pay to belong to the Liberal community (less than 10%). There are about 15 communities.

Celia always wears a skirt at shul, but "out of conviction/belief", she also wears the talit and kippa.
