We got a letter from our HOA today. Seems that since Collin set up the sewing machine in the garage (child free zone) to work on his costume, we've created an "illegal sewing business based out our home".  Cease and desist letter.  14 days to comply.  Need to fill out a little tiny postcard if we need to fight this ( Read more... )

Really? *Really*!!??

Apparently they never heard of people sewing their own costuming, or their own clothing in general. Also, threaten them with legal action if they continue harassing you for pursuing a not-for-profit hobby.

Moreover, even if you were running a home business out of the house, it is perfectly legal per your city's ordinances:

And seeing as he's not even doing any of the sewing for profit, these people can so go f&*# themselves.

Oh yeah, and because you're dealing with a bunch of idiots, make sure to send your letter certified with a return receipt and file those away in a safe place so they can't claim they lost it.

I can go you one better. they didn't call me back, and Col had his phone on mute, so I called after school.

My rep use to work faire in Agoura until 15 years ago. The minute I said I work faire and we had to make kids and our clothes, she busted up laughing in a cool way, then said "let me guess, there were clothes strewn around the garage and you and a few friends were crammed in there until wee hours, working on weird clothes; hence someone said you had a sweatshop."

Needless to say, there is now a note on our file: DOES NOT HAVE A SWEATSHOP in garage. Come spring, sewing will commence.
